81-year-old man dies after being struck at marked crossing in Escaldes-Engordany

An 81-year-old man has died after being struck by a car while using a marked pedestrian crossing on Avinguda Fiter i Rossell in Escaldes-Engordany. The collision occurred on Wednesday evening at about 6:45 p.m. near the elevator that leads to the hospital plaza.

Police said the vehicle, which bore Andorran plates, was leaving a nearby parking area and was travelling in the opposite direction along Carrer Manel Cerqueda Escaler when it hit the pedestrian. Witnesses and local media reported the victim was crossing at the marked crossing when he was struck. Both the victim and the driver are reported to be residents of Andorra, and the victim lived in Andorra la Vella.

Emergency medical teams and police, including Escaldes traffic officers, attended the scene and temporarily closed the road. The man received first aid at the site and was taken to Hospital Nostra Senyora de Meritxell, where he was admitted to the intensive care unit in critical condition with a severe head injury.

Hospital sources later confirmed that the man died despite medical efforts to save him. Authorities have not released further personal details.

Some local outlets suggested the driver may have been confused by temporary traffic changes linked to nearby roadworks, but police have not confirmed this. An investigation into the circumstances of the collision is ongoing.
