Ismael and Santiago González, 37-year-old twins from Encamp, are promoting their first EP, Corazón, produced by Carlos Lozano and positioned between rock and pop. They chose the name Furgas as a tribute to a nickname used by their grandfather and great-grandfather, a part of their identity they wanted to recover.
Their musical partnership goes back decades. Their first band, Cuajada, formed when they were 17 and had a more punk sound; they even remember playing at a 40 Principales event in Sant Julià more than 20 years ago. The brothers describe a long-standing complicity: they complement each other in writing and composing, often finishing each other’s ideas and sometimes even saying the same words at once.
Corazón contains four tracks that aim to connect emotionally. "Pozo" deals with coming out of depression and realizing you are not alone yet remaining a good person, while "Aurora" tells of a breakup. The songs handle tough themes but take a positive approach. The recently released "Vicios" reflects on the line between a vice and an addiction, suggesting a vice can sometimes pull you out of darkness—playing guitar, for example—but can become harmful if it crosses a line.
Both brothers say they have experienced dark moments and believe they can be overcome: “Everyone has had negative moments. Time heals everything,” they note. As people from a small town, they focus on everyday street stories that many listeners can relate to.
The EP features several notable collaborators: Toni Mateo on drums—who has worked with artists such as John Legend and Joaquín Sabina—Pere Revert on mastering, and Miguel Espinosa on keyboards and backing vocals. The duo emphasizes their desire to surround the project with experienced professionals to achieve a high-quality result.
Streams have come from unexpected places: most listens are currently from Mexico and Argentina. The brothers say they did not expect to reach audiences more than 15,000 km away and are pleased with the response, though plans for concerts abroad are not immediate. They plan to release a second EP next year, which will include at least one song in Catalan.
For both Ismael and Santiago, the sweetest moment so far has been the connection with live audiences—feeling people join in and sing the chorus during concerts.
