Andorra Endavant has warned of short- and medium-term effects from the new Catalan language law after a complaint was filed against a local agency for communicating with its foreign clients in Spanish.

Speaking in the General Council, group president Carine Montaner said the law could force companies to close if they face fines of up to €60,000 for not using Catalan. “We had warned about the law’s drift and now we will see the consequences,” she said.

Montaner criticised the sanction against the agency for addressing potential clients in their own language. “If I want to win over the Spanish market I will speak Spanish, and if I want to win over the American market I will speak English; it’s common sense,” she said.

She added that the law should be used as an integration measure and acknowledged the benefits of asking people to make a minimum effort to use the official language, but warned that authorities “should not cross the line.”
