Lawyers for the Pujol Ferrusola family asked for the trial to be annulled, arguing “violation of fundamental rights, a generic and abstract accusation by the anti‑corruption prosecutor, and prescription.” The trial began yesterday at the National Court in Madrid.
According to Catalan media, criminal defence lawyers Cristóbal Martell, for Jordi Pujol Ferrusola, and Jaume Campaner, for Josep Pujol Ferrusola, argued that the investigation was opened “illegally” after Spain made use of international letters rogatory with Andorra in 2015.
The defence lawyers said Andorra had placed a reservation forbidding it from informing other countries when the matter concerned fiscal offences and tax crimes, and contend that Spain obtained the information “illegally.”
The Catalan press recalls that on 7 July 2014 the Spanish newspaper El Mundo published the bank accounts of the Pujol sons, and days later Jordi Pujol acknowledged the inheritance left by his grandfather Florenci.
